Destination Guides
At Fraser Eagle Worldchoice we are constantly looking out for new and interesting ideas for holiday and short break destinations. This month we feature two destinations that we believe offer something unique to the holidaymaker, whether you are looking for beautiful scenery and beaches, interesting history, somewhere new and exciting or a destination that is familiar and friendly.
Malta
This island in the centre of the Mediterranean has been welcoming visitors for millennia. Little wonder! Where else can you see the oldest freestanding temples in the world, admire Caravaggio’s masterpieces, dive on wrecks, sip a latte in front of the most stunning fortifications in the world, take an off-road jeep safari, have a candlelit al fresco dinner and then party till dawn? All on the same day. Malta’s size makes it possible as nowhere is much further than 15 minutes away. The island has a dazzling variety of upmarket hotels and spa resorts at extremely good value and restaurants are plentiful and varied. It also feels reassuringly familiar. Everyone speaks English, you can get a good cup of tea and half the locals support British Premier League teams (the other half support Italians!).
Cuba
The Caribbean conjures up images of luxurious decadence, a beach-fringed paradise of fine white sand and swaying sugar cane estates. Cuba has all this but with a pinch of spice provided by its history of Spanish colonial settlers, African slaves and indigenous people. There is an energy here that is hard to find elsewhere: It is no coincidence that the sensual salsa originated here!
Fidel Castro and Che Guevara may be the best known images of Cuba but this is a shame as the island has numerous treasures as a walk through its capital Havana will soon show. Enjoy its crumbling colonial architecture, numerous churches, museums, Chinatown… and of course its wonderful spiced foods. Be prepared to dance in the streets…
